Arthritis affects more than 50 million Americans and is the leading cause of disability nationwide. The two big categories, osteoarthritis (wear and tear) and inflammatory arthritis (autoimmune), look similar but need very different treatment. Getting the right diagnosis is step one, and that's where primary care matters most.

01

Types of arthritis we treat

We manage common forms of arthritis directly and coordinate specialist care when needed:

  • Osteoarthritis, the most common form, from joint wear over time
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune; needs early, aggressive treatment to prevent joint damage
  • Gout, sudden, severe attacks usually in the big toe; very treatable
  • Psoriatic arthritis, joint involvement alongside psoriasis
  • Lupus and other connective tissue diseases (co-managed with rheumatology)
02

Symptoms that bring patients in

If any of these are persistent, get evaluated, early treatment changes the trajectory:

  • Joint pain or stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Swelling, warmth, or redness around joints
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Pain that wakes you up at night
  • Symptoms in multiple joints at once
  • Fatigue along with joint symptoms (often signals inflammatory arthritis)

How we treat arthritis

Treatment depends entirely on what type you have. We start with a thorough exam, targeted labs, and imaging when appropriate, then build a plan that may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and topical pain relievers
  • Joint injections (corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid)
  • DMARDs and biologics for inflammatory arthritis (with rheumatology)
  • Gout-specific therapy: allopurinol, lifestyle modification
  • Physical therapy referrals to preserve mobility
  • Weight management, even modest weight loss meaningfully reduces knee and hip pain
Questions, Answered

Frequently asked questions.

Don’t see your question? Reach out and we’ll answer it directly.

How do I know what kind of arthritis I have?
A combination of physical exam, blood tests, and sometimes imaging tells us. Pattern matters: morning stiffness lasting over an hour and multiple joints involved suggests inflammatory arthritis; pain that gets worse with activity in one or two joints suggests osteoarthritis.
Will I need to see a rheumatologist?
Osteoarthritis, gout, and many other forms of joint pain can be managed in primary care. We refer to rheumatology for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, and any case where DMARDs or biologics are needed.
Are joint injections worth it?
For the right patient, yes. Corticosteroid injections can break a flare and buy 2–3 months of relief. Hyaluronic acid injections may help knee osteoarthritis. We'll be straight with you about what to expect.
Can lifestyle changes really help arthritis?
Significantly. Weight loss, low-impact exercise, sleep, and managing stress all measurably reduce joint pain. They won't replace medication for inflammatory arthritis, but they multiply its effect.
