Urgent care or the ER? How to decide when every minute counts

The rule of thumb: if it could be life-threatening, go to the ER. Everything else, infections, minor injuries, flu, rashes, lab work, can usually be handled at a regular clinic visit. During the week, call us first at (361) 208-6701; same-day visits are often available.

Signs you need the ER: chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms, severe allergic reaction, major trauma, or any condition that is rapidly worsening.

Signs a clinic visit is the right call: sore throat, ear pain, urinary tract infection, sprained ankle, cuts that need stitches, high fever without other severe symptoms.

Our Portland clinic is open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 7 PM, and same-day visits are often available. If it can't wait until we reopen and it isn't an emergency, an urgent care center is a good option; for anything life-threatening, call 911 or go to the ER.
