Urgent care or the ER? How to decide when every minute counts
The rule of thumb: if it could be life-threatening, go to the ER. Everything else, infections, minor injuries, flu, rashes, lab work, can usually be handled faster and cheaper at urgent care.
Signs you need the ER: chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms, severe allergic reaction, major trauma, or any condition that is rapidly worsening.
Signs urgent care is the right call: sore throat, ear pain, urinary tract infection, sprained ankle, cuts that need stitches, high fever without other severe symptoms.
Our Portland location is open daily 9 AM to 7 PM, including weekends, so you rarely need to choose the ER for a non-emergency.
